Yes, it was a hot day in July, and I must say the pizza at
Slice Pizza & Brew was hot as well. Especially, if you tasted the Spicy Hawaiian! Freshly sliced jalapenos, pineapple chunks, and capicola ham, team up to give you a spicy slice of pizza. I would suggest a dipping of ranch to cool down your tastebuds. You might want to play it safe and keep the toppings minimal, but if you want my opinion, you can't go wrong with the Margherita! With fresh tomato, mozzarella, and basil, a pairing of Dos Equis XX lager is recommended.
A starter of garlic cheese bread and a side of fresh pizza sauce went down well with the local beer on tap from
Avondale Brewing Company. If you aren't a fan of pizza, or are just scared of bread, period, then Slice can serve up a delectable plate full of mixed greens, crisp iceberg, healthy spinach or tasty arugula with various toppings. The salads make a statement themselves, but are a great partner to any pizza on the menu. As the server announced the specials for the night, I knew exactly what would make my meal complete. Seared tuna adorned with sliced green onions, crunchy rice sticks, a sweet glaze, atop a juicy slice of watermelon was a delightful surprise for a pizza joint to serve such an "out of character" appetizer.
Another delicious special was the heirloom tomato salad, prepared with a mixture of local ripe tomatoes, fried eggplant, pieces of corn, and other unique veggies hand-picked from local farms.
Occupying what appears to be an old house, Slice Pizza & Brew has made a big statement in the city of Birmingham, thus far. Providing plenty of outdoor patio seating, including a covered deck on the side of the restaurant where patrons can enjoy the steamy heat of the summer, and watch the sun go down over the Lakeview community. Indoors, you can chill out in the A/C, but you better claim your table early. The seats go quick, especially at the bar top. Sweating out most of the calories we consumed, we chose to sit outside on the deck, but had great service, and a fun time. I think we can all agree that Slice is a place we will visit twice!
